Importance of Bt Cotton in Agriculture

Bt cotton variety is genetically transformed with the Bt gene to protect the plants from bollworm

* The Bt gene is derived from a bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis * Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is a gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium, produce protein crystal that is toxic to insects

* The bacterium produces proteins such as  Cry1ac and Cry2ab * Bt cotton cntols all types of bollworms such as American, Spotted and Pink bollworm

* When the bollworms feed on the Bt cotton, the Cry1Ac protein passes throught themidgut of insect causing lysis and death of insect.

* Increases the farm's income * Reduce the usage of pesticides * Improve crop yield * Helps to control soil pollution
