Bokashi Composting: Turn Food Waste Into Garden Gold

Bokashi composting is ideal for small spaces and apartments, faster than other methods, and can handle tough compost materials like meat and dairy.

To get started with bokashi, you will need three things: a bokashi bucket or composter, bokashi bran, and food scraps or yard waste.

Materials required

Sprinkle bokashi bran at the bottom of your bucket, add layers of food scraps, and press them down to minimize air pockets.

Add Organic Matter

Spread bokashi bran evenly over the organic matter and tightly close the composter lid.

Sprinkle on Some Bran

Layer organic matter and bran in your bokashi bucket. Keep food scraps in a countertop bin and add them daily to limit oxygen.

Repeat

Place the filled bokashi bin in a warm spot that’s out of direct sun and allow it to ferment for 2 weeks without lifting the lid.

Ferment

After 2 weeks, the food scraps internal structure will change. The pre-compost is too acidic, so let it rest for another 2 weeks .
