Learn How to Grow and Harvest Oyster Mushrooms at Home

Oyster mushrooms are a type of edible fungi. They grow quickly & are tolerant to many conditions. Here are the steps to grow and harvest at home

Pick a growing medium such as coffee grinds or straw to give nutrients to mushrooms. Straw substrate is better for homes

Choosing a substrate

Soak the chopped straw in water for a few days and then drain to remove any excess water

Substrate preparation

Mix the drained straw with mushroom spawn and pack tightly in a plastic bag. Do holes to bag to allow exchange of air & remove excess water

Inoculation

Place the bag in warm & indirect sunlight locations. Maintain humidity of 85-95% by spraying water using a spray bottle

Climate conditions

Mushrooms grow after a week to 10 days. Initially white thread-like mycelium develops, to allow them to grow out, cut the bag into slits

Growing period

After 3-4 weeks, once the caps open and the edges start to flatten, then gently twist and remove mushrooms from the substrate
