Step-by-Step Guide for Making a Good Vermicompost

Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, organic material formed by earthworms by breaking down organic waste. Steps to prepare vermicompost are as follows

1. To prepare compost, either a plastic or a concrete tank can be used. The size of the tank depends upon the availability of raw materials.

2. Prepare the bed of the compost pit by adding a layer of soil or sand at the bottom of the tank

3. Now prepare a fine bed by filling the pit with the chopped, dried biomass and sprinkle cow dung slurry on the heap for quick decomposition.

4. Fill the pit by adding both chopped biomass and partially decomposed cow dung with slurry layer-wise.

5. After filling the pit, release the earthworms into the mixture and cover it with dry straw. Sprinkle water on a regular basis to maintain the moisture

6. Cover the pit and protect the compost from rainwater and direct sunshine. Have frequent checks to maintain moisture and temperature.

7. It can take 90-120 days to produce good vermicompost, but the time taken varies depending on the type of earthworm and organic matter used.
