Organic Control Measures to Manage Thrips in Tomato

Thrips is one of the most serious insect pests of tomato crops, which cause enormous economic losses, both directly and indirectly. On an average it causes 60% of yield loss along with the market value. Thrips are a biological transmitter of the TOSPOvirus group. They are transmitted by nearly eight species of Thrips and Frankiniella. Tomato thrips are highly polyphagous. In addition to tomato crops, they also consume a wide variety of vegetables, bedding plants, flowers, and weeds.

Environmental factors favorable for pest infestation:

  1. Temperature: Peak population is observed during November and December where the temperature is 12-25°C.
  2. Relative Humidity: Favorable relative humidity for the production of thrips is 60-70%.

Most affected states in India:

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Symptoms:

  1. Initial Symptoms: Thrips are the  feeder they suck sap from the phloem tissues of the plant, due to which we can observe silvery streaks on the leaf surface and curling and puckering of leaves
  2. Severe Symptoms:  Later they shift to flowers and buds and feed on it. Infected flowers drop prematurely and buds are necroted. This pest is a vector of tomato spotted wilt virus. Due to this complex, we can see complete drying and death of plant
